Week 1: Well, at least everyone knows I'm actually a beginner
So, it officially begins. Here’s what the week looked like:
Thursday:
Do I like this drawing? No. Do I care? Yes. I do. This disappoints me. If this is how the rest of them turn out, I’m going to be an extraordinarily unhappy artist. In all fairness, I only looked at the reference once and then did my own thing.
Friday:
I found a picture of some pretty weeds I had seen a while ago. Apparently, the simpler the flower is, the harder it is to make it look right. Once again, I’m fairly disappointed.
Saturday:
On Saturday, I had the pleasure of working as an election judge. Through the swarms of individuals rushing to vote early (7 people. In 4 hours there were around 7 people), I somehow managed to find time to sketch some flowers. Am I proud of them? Eh, not really. Was I able to use any references? Well, no. In order to appear engaged and ready-to-register, I refrained from staring at my phone.
I remember in elementary school this was pretty much the most advanced flower anyone could draw. Anyways, let this be a friendly reminder to go vote if you can.
Sunday:
I spent the vast majority of Sunday worrying about college applications. Was it productive? Yeah, I think so.
Monday:
After submitting the last of my college applications, guess what I did? Well, it wasn’t drawing plants.
Tuesday:
For the first time, I let myself watch the entire season of Derry Girls on Netflix in an attempt to recover from college applications. For the most part, it worked. So, I found a picture of plants in my grandparents’ garden which come together to vaguely resemble a llama.
As you can see, I can draw plants just as well as I can draw animal topiaries.
Wednesday:
As I wrapped up the second and third season of Derry Girls, I came to the realization that I hadn’t attempted to draw a plant. Thankfully, my phone reminded me of a hike I had gone on with my cousins in Chicago. We came across a pond, covered in pretty lily pads. The turtles were a bonus.
So, here you have an attempt at a lily pad which perfectly demonstrates my inability to draw basic shapes.
Endnotes: Am I surprised at my lack of artistic ability? No. Does every single image I created this week make me cringe? Yes. Am I going to continue with this topic? Yes. I sort of like looking back at all my plant pictures.
Let’s hope next week goes better.

This was so much fun to read, Safa!!! I love your renditions of the plants you saw, especially the llama. The little snippets of your life were so relatable (like the part about binging TV post-November 1), and I hope you keep weaving them into your future posts!
